Numbers of Common Gulls, and other gulls, coming into the Meon Valley now greatly reduced, the spring cultivation of arable fields so attractive to them having been completed quickly and early after a dry February.

Counting the gulls that move into the upper Meon Valley and onto the fields of the South Downs from their coastal roosts each day is challenging. Today the main morning movement took place between 6.50am and 8am. During that period I decided to see how long it would take to count a thousand northbound gulls from a first floor window. It took 14 minutes (0725-0739). Today, unlike yesterday, nearly 60% were Black-headed Gulls, my count over those 14 minutes comprising approximately 575 Black-headed, 400 Common, 25 Mediterranean, 3 Herring and 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls - the latter species being the first of the spring. This count suggested a northbound movement of perhaps 4-5,000 gulls up the Meon Valley this morning. However, as not all gulls follow the river, the number of gulls moving inland in this area each day is likely much higher.

Between sunrise and 10am approximately 4,500 gulls moved northwards from their coastal roosts up the Meon Valley, drawn by current spring cultivation of the arable farmland of the South Downs. With these Common Gulls were approximately 800 Black-headed Gulls, 200 Mediterranean Gulls and 2 Herring Gulls. .
