m/f. The previous incarnation of the 'Eling Swans' sadly came to an end in early October when the cygnet disappeared - last seen on the 2nd and the single mother went awol a few days later. A new pair have now appeared and are regularly sleeping on the hard in front of the Anchor pub and searching for food on Bartley Water around the existing nesting site. It's possible the female is the previous 'single mother' as it seems to be familiar with the island where it nested earlier this year.
26/10/23Mute SwanBury Marshes27P Villiers
16:00
22 ad 5 cygnet. After the +80 counts in August/September at Redbridge/Eling Great Marsh, the numbers have dropped drastically in October. I walked along the shore at low tide from Goatee Beach to Marchwood, and found just this one group at Bury Marshes.

29/08/23Mute SwanEling Great Marsh82P Villiers
15:00
76 ad 6 cygnets. As usual, spread across the Test between Redbridge and Eling Great Marsh between high and low tide. Includes the two families - 2 adults plus 5 cygnets (sadly down from the original 8) and the 'Eling 2' (mother plus cygnet).

pair with 8 cygnets. SU553175.
09/08/23Mute SwanEling Great Marsh84P Villiers
15:00
83 ad 1 cygnet. Record count, I believe, for location - accurate as I did 3 separate counts, 2 from Goatee Beach and a further one from Redbridge Wharf. Includes the 'Eling' adult plus 1 cygnet but no sign of the larger family (2 ad plus 7 cygnets) which would have increased the total to 93!
07/08/23Mute SwanEling Great Marsh11P Villiers
13:15
ad 3 juv 8. Two families - 2 plus 7 cygnets and 1 plus 1 cygnet (the 'Eling swans'). Both are separate from the main group of 73 posted by SC at Redbridge - so a very healthy 84 in total along the Test today.

25/06/23Mute SwanEling Tide Mill2P Villiers

ad female. 1 cygnet. Sad news - the adult male had to be put down due to unexplained injuries. The female seems to be coping well with the solitary cygnet.
25/06/23Mute SwanEling Great Marsh50P Villiers
16:00
ad. All on south east side of Redbridge Causeway close to containers, so probably more out of view. Excludes the pair at the Tide Mill and the small group at LTM which were too far away to get a count. Lots of disruptive speed boat activity going far too close!

2ad 1 juv. Ref my post 6 April re the 'Eling swans', good to at last confirm 1 cygnet. As the last two years have been barren, this is a step in the right direction!

ad m/f. The 'new' pair are nesting on the island in the millpond. The pair are the existing female, which had bred successfully until 2021 and her new mate, following the previous mate having to be but down in 2021. They didn't breed last year. We are concerned that the nest is in danger of being flooded if high tide exceeds 5m - the photo I'm posting in the gallery was taken at high tide today when it was 4.3m.
29/03/23Mute SwanWoolmer Pond1M Lawn

Usual place by the quay apparently, waiting to be fed by passers-by. A day trip to Emsworth for a lunch meeting pleasantly coinciding with low tide!
01/02/23Mute SwanEmsworth40A Southsea
11:30
mixed sex & age. I think this is more than I have seen before. I fed them with 2 bag of wild bird mixed seeds deposited close to the water line as they need water to swallow dry matter. (Meanwhile some people were throwing their ham sandwiches at them ignoring the fact that they are vegetarian - mostly). SU748054.

mixed sex and age. https://www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=236835442017035&set=pcb.236882125345700 ---- With the help of this Facebook page, we encourage, those who can, to go and feed them as they are immature swans (6 to 36 months, ie. below breeding age & brought here by their parents) currently 92+ "babies" depending totally on the surrounding short grass of the park (vitamins) and passing benefactors for food (energy) .
