Post breeding gathering. Starting their autumn moult. One lone duckling (about 2 to 3 weeks old) is all this species has to show after a disastrous breeding season. I noted 4 broods totally 16 ducklings. None have survived.

I watched a menacing Mute swan approach a female Mallard with a brood of 8 young chicks. The mother positioned herself between the swan and her chicks to defend them and twice was grabbed by the swan and tossed up into the air. All birds and chicks survived. I could not find the brood of 17 I saw on the Deeps last weekend.
