Two pairs on the marsh including the Orwell Estuary colour-ringed bird. No view of the chicks today but given the behaviour of the adults they were in cover.

15:30
With lots of contact calling over the last couple of weeks I was confident there were chicks well hidden in the oxeye daisy. Great to see two medium size chicks this afternoon come out in the open on the North Island closely monitored by one of the parent birds.

16:37
Suspicions of two pairs confirmed today, 4 adults + 4 chicks seen at same time and photographed by BBOWT work party. Handily they were all on the shallow scrape, close views, at end of path to hide. I only saw 3 adults later deep in Juncus but constant contact calls, also for second visit in row one on post for some time.

3 adults, one on car park post calling ! 2 chicks seen, getting larger and feeding in water like adults, also swimming. 2 ad stayed with chicks, another adult at opposite end of entrance field, hard to spot, stayed in Juncus looked alert, possibly 2 pairs breeding ?

2 adults + 2 chicks, one noticeably bigger than other.
24/05/21RedshankGallows Bridge4T Watts
18:39
2 adults + 2 chicks. Chicks seen together very briefly a few times but often widely separated and suprisingly sometimes fair distance from adults. Adults being very low key, quiet and mostly in amongst Juncus.

2 adults with 1 chick ( photographed) after 2hr + watch not sight or sound of any Redshank. Large flock of L.B.B Gulls on site, only saw 2 Lapwing chicks and suspect recent aerial predation so all breeders and chicks staying very quiet and low key. Eventually heard single note contact/ alarm calls from Redshank with the chick. Seen from car park.

3 adults - 1 chick seen with two adults. Long watch, very hard to spot chick. Scan Juncus clumps in entrance field looking for adults not feeding on pools but in upright stance in cover, head flicking looking alert. Then stay on these and if lucky the chick may stray into shorter grass area very briefly, both times seen it adults usher it back into cover. Good news is if hard for us to spot hopefully hard for aerial predators too ! .
