male. Foxcote Res. First picked up bird in poor weather at 9am with small influx of Pochard (10) with which it loosely associated. Initially leant towards Ferruginous*Pochard hybrid as thought eye colour seemed yellow and was unsure of bill pattern although head shape and clean white undertail coverts seemed good for FD. At 17.20 onwards in better light and with Simon Bosher, we worked through ID criteria and concluded that eye was white, bill was slate coloured with black nail, rich brown head had darker collar with uniform back and slightly paler but also uniform flanks. Confirmed that clean white undertail coverts were surrounded by narrow black feathering. Therefore changed likely id to pure FD rather than hybrid. Will submit more detailed record and load a couple of poor record shots as bird was distant.
