Wellies definitely needed. in last couple weeks, (usually inaccessible before that) pintails with discoloured breasts have appeared. colour ranging from creamy pink to orangey/red. A la whooper swan plumage stained from feeding in iron-rich/peaty water. Not a common habitat in W Oxon I assume? Prior to this, pintail plumage was normal, including those out of eclipse. I'm told these are passage birds returning from wintering in peat-rich areas in Ireland. Sounds plausible (must research). If true, nice to show P60 good for passage pintail as well as wintering - when in flood. there was 1 each of fem goosander and gadwall similarly stained. | |||
