Out in the open in front of the hide, sleeping when I arrived, then woke up suddenly, quick wing stretch and preen, then started probing for feed before disappearing into thicker clump of reeds. Thanks Mike Wallen for news of the sighting!

Flushed from a riverside meadow with a lot of dead vegetation, standing water and ice in it. It flew off silently and over the hedge to the lake. Small size, no pale trailing edge to wings and faster wingbeat than the Common Snipe that flushed a minute later. A useful comparison.
