20/06/23RedshankCollege Lake5A C Bayliss
Finally got sight of one from the older brood of two now in full juvenile plumage, the bird having moved islands. Hopefully the other one is there too. Did not see the remaining chick from the younger brood but contact calling from adults suggests it was hidden from view. All 4 adult birds still present.
10/06/23RedshankCollege Lake3A C Bayliss
An adult pair and their chick. Looks like only one of the brood of three is present. Being minded by the colour-ringed bird. No sign of the other brood of two which would be in juvenile plumage now.

A brood of 3 small chicks being minded by the colour-ringed adult. Four adults present in total with lots of contact calling. The older brood of two were not seen but hopefully they were hidden by the thick vegetation. .

4 adults but also one of the pairs very agitated sticking to a small area of thick vegetation. Possibly chicks moving around as grass stems moving and glimpse of something moving around next to adults.

18/05/23RedshankCollege Lake4A C Bayliss
Spotted two adult redshank being aggressive towards a lapwing near what I was pretty sure was the nest site. I was delighted to see two newly hatched chicks moving through the vegetation. It's quite possible there are more than two in cover deep enough to hide small chicks easily.
16/05/23RedshankGallows Bridge6T Watts
16:23
4 adults, 2 chicks. Took half hour constant scanning to get quick views of chicks, running out of cover to next scrape. They're very different from Lapwing chicks, 'orange' speckled, thin longer bill, longer legs.

11:30
Possibly 3?
15/05/23RedshankGallows Bridge7T Watts

Surprised to eventually get 5 adults in view same time. 1 in middle with 2 chicks, bigger /more mobile than last saw them( if same ones). At same time 4 on biggest pool, entrance field. One pair agitated, one running with neck stretched and other mobbed a Magpie off. After recent watches thought just one pair but highly likely 2 pairs with chicks or eggs ( outside chance 3 pairs?).

Amazingly a passage flock of 20 birds on the north island spit. They were spooked at 1045 and flew around the reserve but did come back down further along the north island. They stayed settled and gave better views from outside the visitor centre. Still present when the reserve closed. Additionally two well established pairs were evident away from the flock.

10:30
A passage flock of 21 birds on the main marsh - the largest single flock I have ever recorded at the site. They attempted to fly off several times but returned to the marsh to roost. A single Greenshank flew around as the reserve opened but quickly flew off east (seen by Dave Bilcock).
